Malaika Childcare Village Project, Voi, Kenya
It is EMI’s privileged honor to partner with North South Partnership from Norway (ie NSP) on the initial design for a new orphanage campus. The Malaika Childcare Village project is a vision in the making, one that will be reaching the hearts, minds and souls of orphans in this Eastern region of Kenya. The development of this new village is to follow the Watoto model, and will grow over time to include up to 144 housing units along with primary, secondary and vocational schools, agricultural areas, a worship and community center and other supporting facilities. This Christ centered campus will be full service, meeting physical, emotional and educational needs for these orphans.
Our EMI team will provide documents for the campus infrastructure (i.e. water supply, wastewater treatment and electrical distribution.) Master planning and a phased build-out approach is a huge part of this project which will span across many years. The architectural team will be developing phase one building designs (i.e. site office, wood and metal fabrication structures), plus building concepts and locations for the rest of the campus.
EMI commits to fulfill our work for Malaika Childcare Village in a God-honoring and timely fashion. This will be a quick turn–key project, so documents and drawings will need to be delivered to the ministry by August of 2017, which means volunteer work will need to be completed by mid-July.
On a personal note, in 1994 I had the opportunity to go to Guatemala on my first EMI mission trip. The focus was also a new orphanage campus. During the trip, our team visited the state run orphanage in the nearby town of Zacapa. Though it was years ago, I still remember walking up to the orphanage and being greeted by those beautiful faces and their contagious smiles; they all wanted to just hold my hand and walk with me. As I sat on the concrete porch with some of the kids after a game of tag, I realized that this is Jesus. This is what the Father’s heart is all about, to love and care for the orphan. Each child I met in Zacapa those many years ago, has a place in our Lord’s heart. Each child has a story, each has a purpose and each one is worthy of HIS love, protection, and provision.
Before I went to Guatemala, I read this verse, and I was constantly reminded of it throughout my entire trip. James 1:27 says “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
When you get down to it, as Children of God we are all adopted. How amazing is that? Will you pray and consider joining us in designing a world of hope for Malaika Childcare Village and giving hope back to the fatherless?
