Our Story
In March of 2014, our family relocated back to the USA to work in EMI's newly formed Global Office. Previously, we've lived/worked in three EMI offices: EMI East Africa in Kampala, Uganda (Jan 2008 – Jun 2010), EMI-USA in Colorado Springs, CO (Jun 2010 – July 2012), and EMI-UK in Colchester, England (Aug 2012 – Feb 2014).

Our story of coming to EMI is somewhat unique in that neither Alisha nor I had ever considered that overseas missions work might be a part of our lives. But God is creative and oftentimes unpredictable, and He can put unlikely people in unlikely places to accomplish His will regardless of what our plans are for our own lives. We both feel that our work with EMI is a perfect example of God showing His strength in the midst of our weaknesses.

Back in 1995 when I finished my civil engineering degree, I was still unconvinced that my long-term plans would include engineering – instead feeling that I would be called into some type of ministry at some point. When I first heard about EMI, surprisingly, I was initially not interested at all (read: fearful!). I did sense that God would one day call me out of engineering and into ministry, but I had no interest in traveling overseas or in missions. In fact, I think I was as unlikely a candidate for overseas missions as you could find as travel was never a big draw for me.

As a kid, I was a big Keith Green fan, and I remember him saying at one point that as Christians, we are all called to 'go', and only those called to 'stay' should be staying. I remember being scared to death, specifically because I didn't want God to call me to be a missionary in Africa! Fast forward 30 years to the point where Alisha and I, married for 11 years at that point, decided to pray and fast one day/week to dedicate ourselves to discovering God's will for our lives. Well, just two weeks into that, I sent off a seemingly benign email to see if there was a way I could volunteer for EMI from home since I wasn't interested in travelling anywhere. Long story short - one month later I was on a plane heading to Africa for a project trip (my first overseas flight), and just under two years later, our family moved to Uganda!

Raising support to work with EMI is another story of our doubt and fear, juxtaposed to God's faithfulness and provision. As I read in one of the support-raising books we used, God will always provide the resources necessary for you to accomplish the things He calls you to do. It was easy to read that, but until we saw Him actually do it in our lives, it was hard to imagine it really happening.

The work I have been fortunate enough to be a part of with EMI is of tangible importance to the needy people of the developing world. I feel humbled and honored to be a part of EMI, an organization that is not only serving the poorest of the poor but also seeking to advance the Good News of Christ's love for everyone – it gets back to something my mom has always said the Christian life can/should be simplified down to: love God and love people …and yes, I realize my mom isn't the originator of that concept (Jesus!).
