EMI Nicaragua, the EMI office serving the Latin America region, opened its doors in Managua in the fall of 2016.  Since that time, EMI Nicaragua has provided design assistance on 36 conceptual, detailed, and construction management projects.  While focusing on projects in Nicaragua, our office works throughout the Latin America region.  We have grown from a staff of 3 missionaries to a diverse mix of 12 international and national staff and interns.

While Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, development has struggled due to a variety of natural, social and political challenges.  The Latin America region has a long history of ministries sharing the Gospel of Christ, yet there continues to be the need for quality design and ongoing discipleship.

The EMI Nicaragua office is currently seeking an Civil Engineering Project Leader to join our team in Managua who will be involved with project leading, engineering design and mentoring of young national and international engineers.  Our engineering staff are often challenged with finding balance between technical design approaches and culturally accepted construction, operation and maintenance practices.

While this position is based in Managua, it will require semi-regular travel for projects around Nicaragua and throughout Latin America.  Since the Nicaragua office operates in both English and Spanish, there will be a level of language proficiency required in both languages.  Up to 12 months of full time language study may be required.

In addition to the typical EMI Staff / Associate Staff prerequisites, candidates for this position must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (professional license preferred).
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in engineering design.
  • Willing and able to relocate to Nicaragua and learn Spanish.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated experience in AutoCAD.
  • Strong leadership and ability to lead multi-national, multi-discipline teams.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain schedules.

The following are essential responsibilities for this position:

  • Spiritual and professional discipleship through EMI’s programs and opportunities.
  • Directly manages the development of engineering designs and preliminary construction details.
  • Ensures engineering design work is completed on time and adheres to the established specifications and standards.
  • Prepare sketches, production drawings, and detailed drawings by hand or using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Communicate designs and cost estimates to those involved in the project, including clients, engineers, quantity surveyors, landscape architects, interior design, urban and regional planners.
  • Travel domestically or internationally 2-3 times a year for 3-14 days at a time for project work.
