BJ worked at a small civil design firm in Ruston, Louisiana named DeForest Engineering Consultants from 2015 through 2019. There he was a civil engineering intern where he learned to use AutoCAD Civil 3D for land development projects. He then attended Colorado State University to study Water Engineering and International Development. During his graduate studies, he was a GTA for the Intro to Civil Engineering and Water for International Development courses and a CAD intern at Landmark EPC in Loveland, Colorado.
BJ is a covenant child of believing parents. He grew up in Grace EPC and attended a high school connected to the church in Alexandria, Louisiana where he was discipled in sound doctrine and good works. Through several trips with Compassion International, he became passionate about serving the global poor with his God-given gifts. In college, he joined the Wesley Foundation of Louisiana Tech on a 30-day construction project in La Gonave, Haiti where they repaired a desalination system. This trip put a passion in his heart to bring clean water and sanitation to impoverished communities worldwide.
BJ is married to the lovely Katie Carter Elkins. Katie is a Speech Language Pathologist in Harrison School District (2) in Colorado Springs. They have known each other since they were seven years old, and have been best friends for many years.
