Important message about the COVID-19 Coronavirus

In an effort to care for all of our personnel, families, and mission around the world, EMI has been taking a number of steps in response to the progress of COVID-19.

Location-specific Crisis Management Teams remain in place to monitor COVID developments, inform, and care for EMI personnel. Decisions about official EMI travel (including project travel) domestically and internationally are being made on a case-by-case basis by Office Directors in locations concerned. EMI’s worldwide offices remain in varying states of closure with personnel working remotely or from home.

We continue to actively monitor the situation and will respond to new information affecting our worldwide ministry and teams. We view the COVID-19 Coronavirus as an opportunity to live out the gospel and our faith in Jesus through the ministry of EMI.

Professional Training & Experience

  • BDesign, University of Florida, Gainesville, 1991
  • MArch, University of Texas, Austin, 1993
  • Registered Architect in Florida, NCARB

Dirk is passionate about innovative design solutions through collaborative planning and integrative problem solving. Growing up in Chicago, exposure to outstanding architecture was a catalyst into the field he loves. Following his education, interest in quality design developed throughout his 16+ year professional career by way of varied exposure to institutional, retail and healthcare project types. Dirk has been NCARB registered in Texas and Florida.

Ministry Experience

Raised in a bi-cultural home, ethnic sensitivities became a fabric in Dirk’s soul, stoked through broad immersion into the beautiful world of international missions. As much as the zeal for architecture burned within, there was a lingering call throughout his professional experience to weave it somehow with the Lord’s purposes on a global scale. That grip on his heart has led Dirk’s EMI journey over the past 17 years, as he seeks to bring honor to Christ’s name, with mind and pencil, among the vulnerable and those where His glorious name remains untold. Since joining staff as a project leader in 2011, Dirk’s focus has developed toward the marvelous puzzles of mission healthcare design and leading the Design Studio of the USA office.

Dirk married his best friend, Joy, in 1991 and have enjoyed living in Texas and Florida, but now call Colorado home, particularly venturing off onto mountain trails whenever possible. Having recently completed her Mediation credentials, Joy is actively engaged in healthy and appropriate conflict resolution amidst churches and non-profit organizations. Their three young adult children (Kelvyn, Kyra & Kaden) are now exploring life on their own, while still living nearby.
