Nestled in the heart of Addis Ababa, ‘the political capital of Africa’, St Matthew’s church has stood for over 60 years. It serves both an international congregation and local people through church services, an after-school learning hub, free meals program and as a base for the wider Anglican church in the Horn of Africa. The site is a strategic point for strengthening the local body of believers and reaching out to others and, as their ministry expands, they are looking to optimize their campus in the growing metropolis.
The site is located in a mixed neighborhood, surrounded by informal housing but close to one of the capital’s main college campuses. It contains a church, library, Sunday school rooms and pastor’s housing and is well used throughout the week for serving different ministries. Each morning, 30 local children are given a full breakfast where they might otherwise not receive anything. During the day, rooms are used for counselling as well as church activities. After school around 200 children come to use their library and classrooms; enabling them to study in a helpful environment whilst learning of God’s love for them. The campus is small but the ministry is expanding and they are looking to invest in their infrastructure in order to plan for the future.
EMI has been invited to serve them by designing a master plan to help them continue and grow their work. This will involve providing conceptual architectural designs for a church expansion, new library, meeting rooms, kitchen, guest house, site facilities, and accommodation for resident and visiting clergy. Alongside the architectural work, the team will be completing structural, civil and electrical evaluations of the campus facilities and providing recommendations for the new designs.
EMI has a long-standing relationship with the Anglican Church in North Africa and the Horn of Africa, including completing several designs which have since been constructed. We’re delighted to have this opportunity to partner with them again in order to support them in their mission of “Reaching the Unreached; Making Disciples; Serving our Neighbors; Working for Unity; Dialoguing with Others.” Will you consider joining this team and being part of their vision for the future?
