Before joining EMI, I was working as a Geotechnical Engineer in northern Canada. I was doing Geotech investigations at various mining sites and involved in civil infrastructure projects in the permafrost regions of Canada. I studied Environmental Engineering with a focus on water and yet I found myself working with frozen dirt. I loved living and working in northern Canada; the lifestyle was active and fun, I had great community, and I was learning a lot from a great team of coworkers.
We had a map of the world in our living room and God prompted me to start praying for different countries. As I prayed, God reminded me of His calling to study engineering for the sake of ministry overseas 8 years prior. I had been on one EMI trip as a volunteer so we decided to contact EMI to start having conversations about what it might look like to join the organization. With prayer and several conversations later, my husband and I joined the EMI Cambodia launch team. Our next steps of joining EMI included pre-field training, another EMI project trip, and developing a team of supporters.
Support raising was a special opportunity to connect and reconnect with as many friends and family as possible before moving overseas. We loved this time of reconnecting with others and were encouraged to hear stories of God working in their lives and families. We value having a team of people who care for us, pray for us regularly, and who give faithfully and generously, allowing us to partake in God’s ministry here in Cambodia.
We are encouraged when people read and respond to our monthly email updates and share about their lives as we share about ours. We also value this unique experience to be connected with several supporting churches, witnessing the diversity and beauty of the Church, and knowing we are upheld in prayer.
The task of raising support can seem daunting; however, it’s not about asking people for money. It’s about developing relationships and bringing a team of people together who care about God’s work of bringing hope and restoration to all people.
