As an intern with EMI Nicaragua in Managua, you will have an opportunity to participate in the work of EMI, engage in a multicultural office environment, and be in the perfect country to explore what Latin America is like. The internship starts with an orientation where you will meet the office staff and fellow interns and get to know the EMI way, as well as receive a little crash course on the Spanish language. Our office is bilingual in English and Spanish, but operates largely in Spanish, so we highly encourage anyone with Spanish skills to consider applying to our office. Following orientation, you will join a Project Leader and other volunteers on a project trip either in Nicaragua or in another country in the region of Central America or Mexico. Your role will be to provide technical assistance to the team and engage with the partner ministry as we develop a design to serve them.

Although projects for this term have not yet been finalized, we normally partner with minsitries that need new or majorly updated master plans or ministries that need our construction management services. We also do in-house projects through our new WASH program where we partner with minsitries that would like to do water or sanitiation projects in the communities where they are already heavily involved within Nicaragua.

EMI Nicaragua interns support both our project trip efforts and internal design work. Your involvement will likely include work on multiple projects during your internship, and in many cases can end up being somewhat of a multi-disciplinary internship. You will work under supervision of Nicaraguan and expat international professional EMI staff and volunteers to produce design plans and report documents. You will have many opportunities to gain professional experience in design software such as AutoCAD and SketchUp, as well as hone your critical thinking and writing skills. You'll be partnered with a mentor to provide guidance as you navigate the highs and lows of working to bring restoration to those who deeply need it.

The internship during this term begins at the end of the dry season and hottest months in Nicaragua, so you would be joining us for when the rainy season begins. This is a good thing. Being located in Managua, you are in an easy place to travel to several of the main tourist areas within an hour or so in any direction. We invite you to serve with your skills in this fun and fascinating land of lakes and volcanoes!
