As an intern with EMI South Africa in Cape Town, you will have an opportunity to participate in the work of EMI, engage in a multicultural office environment, and explore a unique area of the world. The internship starts with an orientation where you will meet the office staff and fellow interns and get to know the EMI DNA. Following orientation, you will join a Project Leader and other volunteers on a project trip either in South Africa or a neighboring country. Your role will be to provide technical assistance to the team and engage with the partner ministry as we develop a design to serve them. Although projects for this term have not been finalised, typical partner ministries include those providing education, hospital care, youth development, and organisations ministering in informal settlements. Along with larger trip-based projects, this office completes several smaller in-house design projects each year.
EMI South Africa interns support both our project trip efforts and internal design work. Your involvement will likely include work on multiple projects during your internship. You will work under supervision of South African and international professional volunteers and EMI staff to produce design plans and report documents. You will have opportunities to gain professional experience in design software such as REVIT, AutoCAD and SketchUp, as well as hone your critical thinking and writing skills. You'll be partnered with a mentor to provide guidance as you navigate the highs and lows of working to bring restoration to those who deeply need it.
The internship begins during the winter season and ends just as summer is starting. Interns have the flexibility to explore Cape Town and South Africa using the leave days included in the internship. We invite you to serve with your skills in this beautiful urban setting!
