Discipling the Next Generation

As design professionals, we are deeply familiar with the importance of foundations. Every strong structure depends on what’s beneath the surface. In the same way, as Christians, we’re called to help build strong spiritual foundations in the next generation—foundations that will stand the test of time.

“Go and make disciples of all nations... teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20).

This calling is for all believers—including those designing the built environment. Your technical skills and leadership give you a powerful platform to invest in others, not just in their careers, but in their walk with Christ.

Your Workplace as a Mission Field

Whether you manage projects, lead a team, or mentor younger professionals, you are in a position to disciple. This doesn't mean preaching sermons at the office—it means walking alongside others with humility, integrity, and a heart for Christ. Discipleship often happens in everyday moments: a conversation about purpose, a decision shaped by biblical ethics, or encouragement during a setback.

Paul modeled this kind of mentorship when he wrote to Timothy:
“And the things you have heard me say... entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2).
This is the heart of discipleship—passing on not just knowledge, but a way of life rooted in Christ.

Designing with Kingdom Perspective

God is the ultimate Designer and Engineer—bringing order, beauty, and purpose to creation (Genesis 1). As we reflect His image in our work, we also model a deeper truth: that our identity and calling are anchored in Him. When we help the next generation see their work through this lens, we’re not just teaching them to build—we’re helping them build for God’s glory.

Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” That means excellence, ethics, and encouragement all become part of how we disciple others.

Leaving a Legacy That Matters

The buildings and systems we design may last decades—but the people we invest in can impact generations. Discipling the next generation isn’t just about skill development; it’s about shaping hearts that seek God, love others, and live faithfully in their vocation.

Let’s be intentional. Let’s make space for relationships that point others to Christ. Let’s build lives, not just buildings!
