Workshop Design Assistant

The Workshop Design Assistant is required to support the operation of the EMI Workshop at Kajjansi Airfield, under the supervision of the Workshop Manager. He will finalize designs and shop drawings, ensure all drawings match as built dimensions, and help estimate materials for projects. He will help to develop a product/shop drawing catalog which could then be presented to potential clients in order to discuss the details and pros/cons of certain designs, accompanied by the Workshop Manager or alone. He will also assist in fabrication, both at the Workshop and on project sites, as determined by Workshop Manager, with the aim of developing his trade skills and the accuracy/detail of all shop drawings. 

• Minimum of Diploma or bachelor’s degree in design, architecture, or a related field is often preferred.
• 1-3 years of experience in similar or related roles in design studios or creative environments.
• Knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit) for technical drawings.

• Design and complete shop drawings as required by the Workshop Manager
• Ensure drawing accuracy through field measurements as necessary
• Comply with EMI drawing standards and help to create standardized shop drawings to aid with all detailed design by EMI Engineers/Architects 
• Coordinate with design engineers and project managers regarding details of product design
• Contribute towards the development of a standard product/shop drawing catalog that sets an industry standard for well-crafted/assembled products with competitive pricing while minimizing workshop expenses
• Assist the Workshop Manager in estimating materials and/or hardware necessary for any given project
• Help coordinate material purchase as required by Workshop Manager
• Help with timber and steel fabrication and assist with field install to gain practical experience and improve overall design/drafting details
• Inspecting product quality and accuracy, following up with assigned shop drawings to ensure accuracy
