To Move Mountains, Sudan
Project Details
To Move Mountains in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan was building their first model primary school, and EMI designed the site and the classrooms to meet this need.
The school consists of four classroom blocks, each block containing four classrooms. The sixteen classrooms will allow two classrooms for each grade. Keeping the building cool during the day is crucial for creating a conducive learning environment. The large overhangs provide much-needed shading, and the ventilation below the roof allows any hot air to escape the classroom quickly. The courtyard in between the classrooms creates a natural space for the morning gathering and allows air to cool before entering the classrooms. The design included outdoor learning spaces, enabling To Move Mountains’s approach in encouraging teachers to think outside the box in their teaching methods.
