Over thirty communities in Alaska are still waiting for full connection to piped water and sewer systems. In these communities, residents haul their own water and manage their own waste, typically by using a five-gallon “honey bucket". While it is a priority for agencies to provide piped water and sewer to communities, the reality is this infrastructure will take years to build. The Mini-Portable Alternative Sanitation System, or Mini-PASS, is an interim in home sanitation solution shown to improve users’ overall health and quality of life. It consists of two components: a vented honey bucket and a hand-washing station. In partnership with Silverline LLC, EMI is installing Mini-PASS systems in nine different communities (Shishmaref, Wales, Brevig Mission, Teller, Elim, Koyuk, Stebbins, and St Michael) in homes that have no piped water and sewer infrastructure. While these communities wait for large infrastructure improvements, residents won’t have to wait to improve their health and quality of life.
