Between 2021 and 2022, in partnership with MK Consulting, engineering assessments were completed for water and wastewater systems in 14 communities, identifying 107 critically needed repairs in 10 of those communities. These repairs, now being implemented from 2023 to 2026 with oversight from the Norton Sound Health Corporation, are essential to keeping aging infrastructure functioning and preventing catastrophic freeze-ups, especially in remote areas. With limited or no funding available for major upgrades, these small-scale repairs play a vital role in extending the life of existing systems and ensuring continued service for the 3,471 people who rely on them. The project also provides local employment opportunities and supports skill development through informal mentorship between site superintendents and water plant operators, who are also trained on new equipment installed as part of the project. Additional necessary repairs have been identified and completed throughout the process, further enhancing the resilience of these community systems.​

Repairs were held in Shishmaref, Brevig Mission, Diomede, Teller, Elim, Golovin, White Mountain, Shaktoolik, Stebbins, and St Michael. This project was funded by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and was implemented in partnership with MK Consulting and CUAP.
