ELWA Hospital

ELWA (Eternal Love Winning Africa) Hospital is located on the ELWA campus in Paynesville, Monrovia and has been providing healthcare to the area since 1965. In 2012, it was determined that a new medical facility was necessary to continue ELWA’s ministry of healing in Liberia, to be funded by the support of Samaritan's Purse. The facility was designed as an 100-bed fully equipped, expandable hospital to be used as a model for other hospitals in Liberia and the West African region in affordability and quality services.

The hospital campus is arranged as multiple independent buildings, for phasing and infection control. Individual structures are located around open courtyards and a healing garden, oriented to optimize airflow from consistent ocean breezes in, around and through passively cooled wards or other function buildings.  Covered open walkways along the perimeter of several courtyards accommodate patient movement and staff circulation between separated buildings, providing protection from harsh sun and rain, and rendering pockets of open‐air gathering outside of congested traffic flow, while most of the medical wards are clustered around the healing garden.
