Professional Training & Experience

Raquel graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a B.A in Graphic Design, B.F.A. in Photography, Minor in Digital Marketing, & Arts Entrepreneurship. Recently she discovered her passion for helping nonprofits forge meaningful connections with the world. Seeing the profound impact truth & service makes on people's lives, she is now delighted to assist using her degrees to reach people internationally, documenting and narrating the stories of lives changed through physical and spiritual reach.

After two internships with EMI, Raquel has noticed her gifts align with EMI’s mission — to design and build spaces that serve communities and the church. Now she is stepping in faith joining EMI’s Fellowship Programme, a multi-year staff commitment specially geared towards spiritual and professional growth while pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Christian Ministry.

Ministry experience

The Lord used Raquel's time in college to deepen her faith tremendously, show her the need for laborers, and grow her desire to see the Gospel reach the nations. Something greater was happening in college, it was not only a time to earn a degree—but rather a time where her faith truly came alive. She became even more invested in the idea of serving ministries, combining her degrees and sharing Christ with others. Raquel was involved with Christian Challenge Compass, which provided many opportunities for her to grow, such as one-on-one discipleship, evangelism on campus, and various mission trips. After graduating, she joined EMI's Visual Communications & Development team. Through this, her calling was reassured.

Family

Raquel was born in one of Mexico's most colorful cities. She grew up there for the first half of her life, later immigrating to a small town in Eastern Colorado. She became the first in her family to learn English and graduate from university in the U.S. Along the way, she was blessed to find a great community that welcomed her, taught her the Lord’s love, and helped her understand the life-changing power of Jesus. Through that, she's noticed the blessing it is to have the gospel and services for affected populations easily accessible. Coming from a location in Mexico where that is not as common, she realizes the hurt that is actively present and the need to help heal physical and spiritual brokenness around the world.

I am excited to announce God's call on my life to return to Cambodia as an EMI fellow in July 2025, ready to serve and trust in God's plan for my life.

I grew up in a Christian home. From a young age, I understood that God’s plan for me was to serve others with the skills and gifts God has given me.

In university, I pursued civil engineering, specializing in structural engineering. During those years, God worked in my heart to point me towards missions in many ways. I read a book called God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew, who had unshakable faith in God. Reading this book profoundly impacted my faith, teaching me to trust in God's provision. Another book, Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne, reinforced my ability to trust in God instead of in my own financial resources. Additionally, several mentors at my campus ministry, whose jobs involved support raising, showed me that a similar missionary lifestyle was possible for me.

During university, I began dating and got engaged to an amazing woman who was very devoted to God but had no interest in a career in Christian ministry. Knowing I was going to marry her, I accepted that being a full-time missionary wasn’t in my future. However, I told God that if we didn’t get married for some reason, I would seriously reconsider missions. Six months later, we broke up. Remembering my earlier promise, I decided to research ways to serve God with my engineering degree.

My searching led me to Engineering Ministries International. EMI fit all of my goals perfectly: to serve God with my professional skills, put my trust in God to provide, and work in a Christian environment. I served in Cambodia as an intern for six months in 2024. I am now returning to Cambodia to serve with the EMI office there for 18 months as a 2025 EMI fellow.

I am excited to share that by God's grace, I have reached my financial support goal through one-time contributions and monthly commitments!
