The R&D department in Uganda built a test setup to measure the impact different roofing materials and roofing systems have in blocking solar energy from being transmitted into the building. Roofing samples were placed on top of polystyrene (Styrofoam) boxes, and three different temperatures within the box were recorded. By comparing the temperatures under the different roofing samples, a relative understanding of how each roofing sample performs compared to others was made. This testing project has been helpful in finding better-performing roofing systems at lower costs, leading to retrofitting and implementation in a variety of projects in Uganda and beyond.
