Important message about the COVID-19 Coronavirus

In an effort to care for all of our personnel, families, and mission around the world, EMI has been taking a number of steps in response to the progress of COVID-19.

Location-specific Crisis Management Teams remain in place to monitor COVID developments, inform, and care for EMI personnel. Decisions about official EMI travel (including project travel) domestically and internationally are being made on a case-by-case basis by Office Directors in locations concerned. EMI’s worldwide offices remain in varying states of closure with personnel working remotely or from home.

We continue to actively monitor the situation and will respond to new information affecting our worldwide ministry and teams. We view the COVID-19 Coronavirus as an opportunity to live out the gospel and our faith in Jesus through the ministry of EMI.

First two weeks of October

It is EMI’s joy to partner with Watoto church in Uganda with their vision of planting a new campus for them in Mbarara, Uganda. Watoto Church has a mission of being a vision-led church, valuing leadership based on Godly principles and goals.

Project Scope

Watoto’s ministry started with the broadcast of a carefully crafted TV ad, featuring the Skinner family, placed strategically after a popular program on a local Ugandan television station, UTV. The ad was captivating and relevant for its time and carried the promise of a Christian church with a difference.

Gary's visionary gifting to see beyond the status quo is evident in the influence Watoto Church has in the city of Kampala and the nation of Uganda today. But the journey has not always been a simple one. It was definitely not so in the early years.

Gary recalls, "Watoto Church (formerly KPC) had been running services in the Imperial Hotel for two years. The congregation was lively and thriving, but the membership had outgrown the capacity of the venue. The leadership began to look around for a building that we could use. We found a number of suitable buildings, but it wasn't until someone directed me to a cinema downtown that I found the one that was just right.

"They called the place The Centre. It was a cinema owned by an Indian family from Goa. The building was dirty, rickety, the roof leaked so badly you had to have an umbrella when it rained. There was a single 100 WATT light bulb to light the entire auditorium and there were rats, bats, cats and 'elephants' living under the platform.

"I said to GOD and Marilyn who was with me, 'Oh what a waste of a fabulous building' and I had a vision. I didn't see it as it was, I saw it as it is today - full of light, totally renovated, beautifully painted, but the best part was that it was jampacked right up to the rafters with young people. Their hands were raised, singing and praising JESUS'.

'I knew that this was the building GOD wanted us to have. I told our team, 'GOD will give us this building.'"

And God gave Watoto Church the building. From humble beginnings in a hotel suite in downtown Kampala, Watoto Church is now, on average, a 27000-strong congregation with 30 weekend celebration services in Kampala and Gulu, Uganda; and Juba, South Sudan. The church is vibrant, youthful, energetic and life-giving.

We are looking to mobilize a team of EMI staff and several volunteers to Uganda in September/October. We will meet with the Watoto leadership and staff and work toward a masterplan and conceptual design for this new campus.

The Project Scope:

Master Planning and Conceptual Design;

A) Initial programming and planning meetings and workshops with Watoto leadership for discussion, feedback and refinement of conceptual ideas and proposals

B) Provide multi-disciplinary (access, pedestrian/vehicular circulation, water supply and storage, wastewater and solid waste management, drainage and grading, site electrical) master-planning for the approximately 18-acre Mbarara site

C) Provide conceptual building design (floor plans, elevations, renderings) for the first-phase priority structures

Please consider filling one of the team needs and join us in partnering with Watoto church on this Mbarara, Uganda Master Plan Project?
