EMI is privileged to partner once again with The Gem Foundation as they continue to provide a safe place for abandoned, neglected and/or abused children with special needs. In Uganda and many other parts of the world, children with special needs are seen as a curse and are often neglected or abandoned. The Gem Foundation has been working since 2014 to care for and love these children, restoring that value and helping others to see the worth of each precious child.

EMI will provide master planning and conceptual design for their Gem Village campus in Kakiri, Uganda. During Phase 1 of the Gem Village project, EMI provided design and construction services for housing and a medical clinic. We are excited to be a part of this Phase 2, as they expand their ministry to include a fully accessible school and playground where no child with special needs is left behind.

Project Scope

The EMI team will visit The Gem Village and engage in initial programming and planning workshops with GEM leadership and staff. These workshops will be a place for discussion, feedback, and refinement of conceptual ideas and proposals. Specifically, the team will need to identify unique needs for students, teachers and staff that will allow for a fully accessible campus that meets the educational needs of the students.
The team will produce the following:

  1. A multi-disciplinary Site Master Plan Update that will include access, pedestrian/vehicular circulation, water supply and storage, wastewater, grading and drainage, and site electrical
  2. Conceptual Building and Site Design (plans, elevations, renderings) for the following elements:
  • School Buildings
    • Chapel
    • Classrooms
    • Kitchen and Dining
    • Administration
    • Toilets
  • Outdoor Pavilion
  • Playground
