The scope of this project is to develop a campus master plan for a specialized pediatric cardiac hospital in Jinja, Uganda, and provide conceptual architectural and engineering design for the first phase of development.
Project Scope
EMI is thrilled to come alongside Hearts of Joy International as they pursue their vision to bring life-saving cardiac care to children with Down syndrome in Uganda. Through their ministry, Hearts of Joy provides life-changing medical interventions for children with congenital heart disease while walking alongside families from diagnosis through recovery with love, emotional and spiritual support. Currently, many Ugandan children must travel to India to receive these life-saving interventions. Hearts of Joy hopes to change that by establishing a specialized pediatric cardiac hospital in Jinja, Uganda, bringing essential care closer to the children and families who need it most.
The hospital is envisioned as a center of excellence for cardiac diagnosis, surgical treatment, and ongoing care, while also providing education and training for local healthcare providers and families. By increasing access to specialized cardiac services, Hearts of Joy hopes to improve outcomes for children with Down syndrome, support their families, and help build a future where every child is valued and has the opportunity to thrive.
Our team will work closely with Hearts of Joy leadership to develop a campus master plan that supports the ministry’s long-term vision for the site and guides phased development over the next 10–15 years. Working in collaboration with Health Facilities Group (HFG), the team will confirm the hospital’s space program and evaluate local building requirements, site conditions, available construction materials, and other opportunities and constraints that will inform the design.
The project will include a campus layout identifying future buildings, roadways, pedestrian walkways, and supporting infrastructure, along with conceptual architectural design for the first phase of development. Our multidisciplinary team will also provide recommendations for site grading, stormwater drainage, water and sanitation systems, and electrical supply and distribution. A conceptual cost estimate and architectural renderings will help Hearts of Joy communicate its vision and support future fundraising efforts.
