EMI is honoured to partner with International Vision Volunteers (IVV) as they embark on a journey to expand their eye treatment and training facilities in Zambia.

IVV is a nonprofit dedicated to bringing sight and eye care to the underserved in the world. For more than 20 years, teams of volunteers have given the gift of sight to thousands of adults and children in Africa.  IVV was founded in 1994 by Dr. James "Bud" Tysinger, who in 1995, was able to gather the funds to build a freestanding eye clinic and modern operating room in Zimba, adjacent to the already existing Zimba Mission Hospital.

Zimba Eye Clinic has one of two ophthalmologists who are available in Zambia’s Southern Province which has a population of over 1.5 million people. However, the clinic draws people from all over Zambia for their eye care services. The clinic also draws people internationally, from Namibia, Malawi, Congo, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

IVV is looking to increase their capacity to serve patients as the current facility is fast outgrowing its capacity to serve patients and accommodate the corresponding increase in required number of staff. Increasing this capacity will include building a new facility that IVV envisions to be both an Eye hospital/clinic as well as a teaching/training facility. Facilities to be provided in the Center may include a microsurgery training lab, library, and classrooms. Operating rooms and a minor procedure room, examination facilities, dispensary and an optical lab suitable for lens fabrication would also be included in the new facility. In addition, support facilities would include administrative and possibly accommodation functions.

Project Scope

Our team's scope will include development of a long-term masterplan, conceptual building design, and site infrastructure planning.

  • Programming: Starting with the list of facilities provided by IVV, EMI will conduct further meetings with the client to draw out requirements of different spaces and conclude this task with a program listing all facilities on the site and associated space needed for each.
  • Site Masterplan: Develop a phased master site plan that incorporates findings, recommendations, and conceptual plans to support and further the mission and vision of IVV
  • Conceptual Building Design: providing building concepts that include floor plans, elevations, and basic 3D images for identified Phase 1 infrastructure and buildings.
  • Site Infrastructure Planning: Assess site conditions and typical practices, and provide recommendations for water, wastewater, drainage, mechanical and electrical systems.

Would you prayerfully consider joining us in partnering with International Vision Volunteers (IVV)  for this exciting work in Zambia?
